From a purity of sport perspective, it's always bugged me in basketball


that intentionally committing a foul is (1) a reasonable way to give yourself a competitive advantage, and (2) a completely normal, accepted, and sportsmanlike way to play the game.

So, for example, football figured out that committing a foul to stop the clock is an unsportsmanlike way to give yourself an advantage and they came up with rules to dissuade it. But fouling to stop the clock in basketball is so normal, no one actually thinks its weird or wrong.
